Custom Decks & Remodeling
Which decking material will you choose to have installed on your deck and why? Wood continues to be installed most often nationwide, but low maintenance materials account for a growing percentage of installed decks, especially along
You may or may not have an interest in learning the ins and outs about the growing number of low maintenance options, but at the very least your contractor should educate you about the differences since many of these products perform quite differently. Some are stain resistant, some are not. Some are scratch resistant, some are not. Some fade more than others. Some offer better footing than others. Some offer hidden fastening systems. Expansion and contraction is a concern with all of these products, heat retention is a concern with some of them, and warranties vary.
With more than forty decking manufacturers, many offering multiple product lines in multiple colors, with differing fastening systems, the only certainty is that the average consumer will be overwhelmed by information. Thus the need for an educated contractor who’s looking out for your best interest, not just which product can be installed the quickest for the least amount of money.
Most decking manufacturers also offer accompanying railings with an assortment of options to choose from. There are also third-party companies who manufacture railings that can be used instead of or in conjunction with other railing systems.
Design Considerations
Aside from materials, the design of your deck is the second major decision you’ll need to make, and like materials, there are many factors to consider.
How will you use your deck?
How much room do you need for a table and chairs?
How much room is needed for a BBQ grill?
What is the best location for your steps?
How wide should your steps be?
What will the traffic patterns be?
Do you want to enhance a certain view?
How is the view from inside your house affected by your deck?
Will the deck compliment your house or will it look like an afterthought?
Where is the best location for benches?
How will the decking be installed, diagonally, with an accent color, with a design, with a hidden fastening system, with a picture frame border?
How can you make your deck and your yard compliment each other?
What should you know about LED lighting?
A qualified deck builder will answer these questions and more. But don’t be mistaken, a building license doesn’t guarantee a contractor will be educated about decking materials and design, nor does it mean he’ll be a craftsmen at his trade, nor does it mean he’ll even care. A building license enables a contractor to acquire a building permit, ensuring that your project will be built to code, period.
That’s why it’s imperative that you call on multiple references, check with the BBB, and visit job sites to see a contractor’s work first hand.
